Registration is open June 5 - June 26, 2017 for Summer Quarter Academy courses in ICC's secure, state-of-the-art, online learning environment. Late registration is available with a $20 late fee June 27 - July 1. Open to both ICC chapter members and non-members.

Online Basics is designed for students ages 12 and up. It mentors in netiquette, digital citizenship, online collaboration, social media use (Instagram and Facebook) with a purpose, and email as a tool to both inform and facilitate community.

Includes: creation of a simple podcast, collaboration via Google docs, Facebook, Instagram, flame wars and trolling, copying others on emails, and the value of drafting emails.

Summer Quarter: Registration is open June 5 - June 26, 2017

Offered: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall Quarters

Course Details


Course Length and Duration

  • Four 45-minute facilitated video-conferences
  • 20 hours of work over four weeks
  • Start Date Monday, July 17
  • All assignments due Aug 18

Sessions Available

  • Thursdays, 10:30 - 11:15 am ET
  • Fridays, 10:30 - 11:15 am ET 


  • Adults and students at least 12 years old. 

 Course Fee

  • $97 for non-members, $87 for members
  • $20 discount for registrations between June 5 - 12
  • $20 late-registration fee for registrations between June 27 - July 1


  • Academy Orientation Course (to be completed 2 days before course start date)



Course Syllabus


Week 1 - Classroom and Google Docs

  • Objectives:

    • Access and navigate the classroom

    • Learn how to submit an assignment

    • Collaborate using google docs

    • Attribute an image

    • Explore netiquette

Week 2 - Basics of Netiquette

  • Objectives:

    • Practice netiquette

    • Practice emailing

    • Articulate the value of sending a copy in email

    • Practice drafting emails for feedback

    • Email an advisor or mentor for a shared project

Week 3 - Online Privacy

  • Objectives:

    • Explore the need for online privacy

    • Seek guidance from a wise guide about online privacy

    • Share a favorite video

    • Discover different genres of social media

Week 4 - Social Media

  • Objectives:

    • Explore concept of sharing a message via video

    • Articulate reasons for discretion on social media

    • Discuss tips in using varying social media

    • Create a social media project displaying what you’ve learned
