This engaging course introduces students to basic public-speaking skills and why they matter.  Students will put these practical skills into practice immediately, as they develop confidence and character while finding their Reason to Speak.

Course Fees

  • $157 for members and non-members 

Course Length and Duration

  • Begins May 21 and ends June 23
  • Tuesdays 9:00 - 9:45 am Eastern Time 
  • Four 45-minute long facilitated video conferences
  • 10 hours work over 4 weeks
  • Weekly discussions and assignments 
  • Any course with less than four students registered will be cancelled.



This course is designed for students ages 11 - 18. Our instructor is trained on how to work with mixed ages. If you have a group of at least 4 students in the same age group (ages 11 - 14 or ages 15 - 18) please contact academy@iccinc.org to explore having a section with just your target age group.



  • Complete the Academy Orientation to gain access to your course. You will learn to submit sample assignments, comment on discussions, take a short quiz and view grades


Course Outcomes

  • Discover reasons to speak

  • Develop beginning skills in impromptu speaking

  • Practice using projection, inflection, and pacing in interpreting a short story or scripture reading by voice

  • Write and give a short platform speech

  • Use a prop to share a simple personal introduction

  • Practice evaluating peers in live practice sessions


Course Syllabus


Week 1 Objectives - It’s Not about Me!

  • Explore an audience-centric approach to public speaking.
  • Discover how effective speaking can be a first step to connection with others.
  • Comprehend how listening and eye contact contribute to effective communication.
  • Understand the connection between speaking and the mission, vision and values of the Institute for Cultural Communicators.
  • Explore how competence, character, and connection assist in the transformation of next generation Christians.
  • Experience the transformative nature of alumni instructor-led video conference calls.

Week 2 Objectives - You’re Next!

  • Practice using limited preparation skills.
  • Develop impromptu speaking skills.
  • Comprehend that our actions speak louder than words (via spoofs).
  • Explore how projection and articulation support effective communication.

Week 3 Objectives - Write It!

  • Develop platform writing skills by using a hook, thesis, visual aid and conclusion
  • Select a palm-sized prop to assist in your self-introduction
  • Practice delivering a speech with clear enunciation and pronunciation
  • Begin to offer peer feedback
  • Learn the sandwich approach to coaching

Week 4 Objectives - Your Voice Matters

  • Practice using pause to help make a story memorable
  • Consider how pitch and pacing supports vocal expression
  • Interpret and record a short story, Aesop’s fable, or scripture reading
  • Anticipate next steps in the coaching journey
