Online Basics mentors in netiquette, digital citizenship, online collaboration, social media use (Instagram and Facebook) with a purpose, and email as tool to both inform and facilitate community.

Includes: creation of a simple podcast, collaboration via Google docs, Facebook, Instagram, flame wars and trolling, copying others on emails, and the value of drafting emails.

Course Details

Course Times and Duration

  • Mondays 8:00-8:45 pm Eastern with Noah Cruce
  • Tuesdays 9:00-9:45 am Eastern with Franklin Gunther
  • Course begins April 16. 
  • Four 45-minute facilitated video-conferences
  • 20 hours work over 4 weeks
  • All coursework needs to be completed by May 19


Course Fees

  • $157 for nonmembers
  • $117 for members


Eligibility: Adults and students at least 12 years old



What About Online Intermediate?

You may register for Online Intermediate through April 28.You are welcome to register for both Online Basics and Online Intermediate at the same time as long as the student successfully completes Online Basics before the start of Online Intermediate.

Pre-Assignment - Academy Orientation Course


  • Sign into your email and the academy classroom

  • Practice participating in discussions, completing quizzes and submitting assignments

  • Discover the course calendar, groups and resources


Week 1 Objectives - Classroom and Google Docs

  • Access and navigate the classroom
  • Learn how to submit an assignment
  • Collaborate using google docs
  • Attribute an image
  • Explore netiquette

Week 2 Objectives - Basics of Netiquette

  • Practice netiquette
  • Practice emailing
  • Articulate the value of sending a copy in email
  • Practice drafting emails for feedback
  • Email an advisor or mentor for a shared project

Week 3 Objectives - Online Privacy 


  • Explore the need for online privacy
  •  Seek guidance from a wise guide about online privacy
  • Share a favorite video
  • Discover different genres of social media


Week 4 Objectives - Social Media

  • Explore concept of sharing a message via video
  • Articulate reasons for discretion on social media
  • Discuss tips in using varying social media
  • Create a social media project displaying what you’ve learned
